The Story of JOYfuel
David grew up with a hyperactive imagination that made it difficult for him to pass the screening process for kindergarten. Frustrated by the school's decision to have him repeat pre-school, David's father, Akinsade, took matters into his own hands. He spent the rest of that year curating a library of information across books, audio tapes, and video tapes covering a wide variety of educational and societal topics, which he and David would explore together on a near daily basis at dedicated times.
By the end of the year, David's academic performance was so transformed that the principal voided the undertaking his father had signed, allowing David to continue to the next grade.
Years later, while working on his master's capstone project at the University of Regina in 2022, David became fascinated with using artificial intelligence to sort through social media content, identifying what was truly valuable and relevant from what was merely noise. He was convinced that social media's power of influence could be better aligned as a fuel for joy and actualization, rather than remaining a tool for distraction and procrastination. Yet the realities of being a first generation immigrant held him back from pursuing this vision immediately.
In 2024, David took the leap. He founded Laroye AI and went full-time on the mission of making JOYfuel a reality, bringing his childhood experience full circle into the digital age.
Today, the battle for the minds and mental wellness of the next generation is happening through digital mediums, including social media. JOYfuel's mission is clear: to equip parents with the tools they need to curate high-quality digital experiences and to simplify the process of spending intentional time with their children, nurturing the values and habits required to use social media content in healthy and purposeful ways as they grow. JOYfuel's unique approach of "intentional content curation" stems directly from that core childhood memory, the transformative power of a parent dedicating time to curate and explore meaningful content with their child.
Currently headquartered in Regina, Saskatchewan, JOYfuel works with organizations including the Black Business Ventures Association, Cultivator (powered by Conexus), League of Innovators, Lab2Market, and Teachers Life to spread the message of healthy screen time to all Canadian parents. The story that began with a father's dedication to his son's potential now extends to empower a generation of parents in the digital age, proving that intentional curation and dedicated time can still transform young minds, even in our connected world.
